About
The Planet Perspective

Our Mission

This website is a passion project by Melissa & Eon de Klerk.  The aim of this project is to serve as a resource for others curious about a more eco-conscious lifestyle, and a place to share our personal stories and observations.

We are always looking to feature others who are on this path, as well as connect with and promote businesses who provide product and services to those who are designing a more eco-friendly lifestyle for themselves.

Our Story

We both grew up in families that ate meat.  It was just a normal part of our diets.  In South Africa, the “braai” or barbeque, is an integral part of the culture.  There’s always meat on the fire.

We met in 2013, adopted a dachshund, Milo, in December of 2015 and got married in 2016.

Melissa says:

I was told about The Art of Living Foundation in 2015 and attended their Happiness Programme.  It’s a programme that teaches breathing and meditation techniques for relaxation and mindfulness.  During the course, I was advised to adopt a vegetarian diet, which I did.  But only for the week of the programme.  It was something that I wanted to continue, but Eon wasn’t easy to convince.

After attending 2 Happiness Programmes, an Art of Meditation Programme, and a 4-day Art of Silence course in the space of a year, I’d eaten a fair amount of vegetarian and vegan food.  But still hadn’t managed to make the shift to becoming a vegetarian.

Fast-foward to 2018.

We travelled to Germany for a few months, where we took out a Netflix subscription (because watching German television is exhausting to try and follow and understand).

We watched “Cowspiracy”, “Food Choices”, “Rotten”, “Chef’s Table” (particularly the episode about Jeong Kwan).

Eon says:

Watching those documentaries shocked me – shocked us both.  I was appalled at how animals are being treated and slaughtered.  Obviously one knows that meat was once a living animal, but we are so far removed from the realities of how they’re farmed and handled that it’s easy to ignore it.

Our daxie pup means the world to us, and we can’t imagine him being hurt in the same way that cows, pigs, sheep and chickens are being hurt.  Thinking about it upsets us deeply.  We know that animals have feelings and experience distress.

Because of this, we decided to stop purchasing meat products, and shift our lifestyle towards consuming plant-based foods only.

We love getting creative in the kitchen, and I suggested to Melissa that we start this website to share recipes that we find and test.  We also want to share our observations and lessons learned, as well as resources that we have come across.

Join us as we share our journey with you.
