I came across Better Straws online while I was looking for stores that sell metal straws. I reached out to Dhrital who owns the company and he gladly answered my questions.
Q: What was your motivation to start this business?
A: I was inspired by the stainless steel straws I used at a restaurant in 2018 and asked the waitress why do they use the stainless steel straws. She spoke about the plastic pollution which got me so interested that I started doing a lot of research and sharing posts to create awareness on my social media. Then I imported some so that I can directly create awareness and a solution via an online store. Then Better Straws was born.
Q: How do you go about sourcing your raw materials so that they’re as sustainable as possible?
A: Our straws are stainless steel and imported. We chose stainless steel as it lasts forever and can be reused just like other cutlery. We also make sure our suppliers do not use any plastic in the packaging so that we use as little plastic as possible in the entire process, from supplier to customer.
Q: How have you designed your production and delivery process to create as little environmental impact as possible?
A: One thing I am struggling with is to find an affordable courier company that does not use any plastic in their delivery of our products. However as this is not yet possible, we encourage our customers to use the courier bags as plant pots or recycle them.
Q: What motivates you to keep going?
A: We must make good decisions for our environment in everything we do. So, whilst I refuse the plastic straw, being able to sell metal straws keeps me motivated in knowing that I can make some change in the world.
Q: What has running your business taught you?
A: The most important thing is for customers to trust the business and its values. They trust you by buying the product, we must make sure our service delivery is on point. I have also learned great financial skills through having a business.
Having this business has also kept be very interested in the plastic pollution problem and I am constantly doing research for new products / new ways to reduce plastic.
Q: What would you like to communicate to the wider community through your business?
A: It’s very easy and convenient to use plastic. But if it can’t be recycled, reused and if it is killing our oceans and environment, maybe we should make a few small changes that will have a very big impact. I would also like everyone to be more open minded to the problem and take action!
