I came across Earth & Kin on Instagram because I follow the founders’ business Instagram accounts.

Earth & Kin is the passion project of Dorae Smith from Bubiroo and Andrea Barras from Bird & Design.

Andrea’s talent for branding, design and marketing combined with Dorae’s skills as a qualified Homeopath and Naturopath have established Earth & Kin as a gorgeous brand with high quality products to match.

Q:  What was your motivation to start this business?

A:  I have always been interested in skincare and after working with similar businesses in the past (through my design business) all natural skincare is something that I’ve become quite passionate about. I decided to find a partner who would be the right fit for me and the business itself, because my actual knowledge of product make up and ingredients is not yet at expert level, and I recognised the value of having a professional on board – leaving me to focus on the things I am good at and enjoy: the branding side of things, the marketing and the sales.

Q:  How do you decide on your products and create a line that’s free of bad ingredients and works as intended?

A:  My partner Dorae is a genius basically – I give her a brief of the ‘vibe’ I want to create (for example: our first few products are unisex and ‘not too floral’ etc) and she comes up with fabulous product suggestions and the ideas for ingredients that might work.  We try to create products that are slightly different to what is currently on offer in the SA market by using new/uncommon inclusions in our ‘recipes’.

Q:  How do you go about sourcing your ingredients so that they’re as sustainable as possible?

A:  Dorae sources all ingredients from a reputable local supplier.

Q:  How are you running your business in a sustainable way?

A:  Apart from the ingredients we use, the packaging itself is the tricky part and what I’ve struggled most with.  I really wanted to have completely earth-friendly solutions, but South Africa is just not that geared up yet (well, not for small businesses like us at least).  We have to sometimes compromise/sacrifice on our options here but we are continually trying to make the best choices possible.

Q:  What motivates you to keep going?

A:  We love our products and want to share them with the world!  We believe in our brand and enjoy running our little business and watching it grow.

Q:  What has running your business taught you?

A:  Haha!  Running any business is fraught with many lessons and learnings! Communication within a partnership (as with all relationships) is key to running things smoothly and being open, honest and genuine (behind the scenes and with customers) is always the best way forward.

Q:  What would you like to communicate to the wider community through your business?

A:  Making small steps to create bigger change is a good start. If you start changing little behaviours daily (eg. recycling, reusing, choosing natural over chemical and so on), it will start to make a big impact in your life and in the environment.
